Sports

Sports are a great way to connect with Calvary UMC. We sponsor softball and flag football teams and many of our church family uses sports as a way to get to know each other better.

this past season, Calvary had two teams in the Frederick Christian Flag Football league as the league draws to a close.

Calvary Softball loses twin bill against Frederick Christian Fellowship Blue

On Friday, April 27, the Calvary men’s softball team dropped their fourth straight game, losing both ends of a doubleheader against Frederick Christian Fellowship (FCF) Blue.  In the opening game, a lack of offense combined with a several big innings by FCF paved the way for a 16-4 loss. Jon Wilcox scored two runs, while Eric Anderson, Bryan Chaney, Rob Wilson and Scott Pearce each had two hits for Calvary.  In the second game, Calvary’s offense got on track too late to overcome a slow start, dropping a 20-8 decision.  Scott Pearce continued his strong hitting on the night, however, going 4-for-4 with 4 RBIs. Rob Wilson and Mitch Reading each scored a pair of runs in the losing effort.  Calvary (2-4) will next play on Friday, May 4 at 8:30 p.m. against Israel’s Creek at Pinecliff Park Field #4.

Calvary Softball Drops Two in Week 2

The Calvary Men’s softball team followed up their season-opening wins by dropping a pair of games to Liberty Fellowship in Week 2 of the season.  In the first game, Calvary jumped to a 7-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning after a trio of RBI singles by Dave Herber, Doug Leidig and Zach Dwyer, and a two-run double off the bat of Trent Butler.  But 14 unanswered runs from Liberty in the bottom of the same inning proved to be Calvary’s undoing on their way to a 15-7 loss.  In the second game, Butler’s two-run homer and three RBIs kept Calvary in the game, but Liberty pulled away in late innings to secure a 10-7 victory. With the two losses Calvary dropped one game behind the Division leaders.

Calvary’s next games are scheduled for Friday, April 27 at 6:15 p.m. at Pinecliff Park Field 4, when they take on division rival Frederick Christian Fellowship - Blue.

Calvary Softball Picks Up Pair of Season-Opening Wins

The Calvary Men’s softball team opened the 2012 Frederick Christian Softball league season with a pair of come-from-behind victories over the People’s Baptist Redhawks.  A solid defense and strong pitching, combined with a pair of doubles from Zach Dwyer and two RBIs from Trent Butler, paced Calvary’s 8-6 opening win.  In the second game of the doubleheader, Calvary found itself trailing 10-0 in the second inning and 14-4 in the fifth inning before a five-run rally in the bottom of the 5th helped set the stage for late inning heroics.  In the bottom of the 7th inning, Josh Reading’s bases-loaded single tied the score at 14, and with one out, Bryan Chaney drove the first pitch he saw beyond the reach of the right center fielder to lead Calvary to a 15-14 walk-off win. Reading’s four hits, Butler’s pair of doubles, and newcomer Jon Wilcox’s four RBIs all played significantly in the win.

Calvary’s next games are scheduled for Friday, April 20 at 8:30 p.m. at Pinecliff Park, when they take on division rival Liberty Fellowship.
