Church and Society

The Church and Society ministry team works in a wide variety of areas which impact the world in which we live. The committee surveys the needs of the local community and organizes our response in service, education, witness and action.

Cold Weather Shelter

The Church and Society ministry team organizes Calvary's efforts in support of the Alan P. Linton Cold Weather Shelter. From November to April, the shelter provides overnight shelter for up to 80 adults.

The shelter is operated by the Religous Coalition for Emergency Human Needs, which brings together Frederick's religous institutions to address homelessness and other poverty related issues.

While the cold weather shelter is primarily aimed at preventing deaths due to hypothermia in the winter months, the coalition operates other programs designed to serve the homeless. The day shelter provides a warm and safe environment for homeless adults who are unable to work due to their health or other disability. The Exodus project, which operates during the warm-weather months, seeks to offer a path out of homelessness by combining long-term shelter with counseling, education, and training.

Volunteers are always needed, especially for the day shelter and Exodus project. The coalition also regularly receives supplies to operate the shelter and financial donations to support their ministry. You can learn more about the Religous Coalition by clicking here.

Soup Kitchen

The Frederick Community Action Agency provides a daily meal to those suffering from hunger at the soup kitchen. The City of Frederick staffs the soup kitchen on weekdays, while volunteer groups cover weekends and holidays.

Calvary staffs the soup kitchen several times a year. We also provide the food served during our shifts.

More information on the Soup Kitchen and other services provided by the Frederick Community Action Agency is available from their website.

Wheelbarrow Sunday and The Frederick Food Bank

Wheelbarrow Sunday is a long-standing Calvary tradition. On the first Sunday of every month, a wheelbarrow is placed outside the parish hall to collect canned and other non-perishable food donations for the Frederick Food Bank. A family from Calvary brings the congregations donation to the bank after the Sunday worship services.
The religous coaltion, which also runs the cold weather shelter, operates the Frederick city food bank and seven other food banks in Frederick County.
